3rd Annual Workshop on Enabling Process Innovation through Computation
Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Friday, May 1, 2015
EPIC@LSU (Enabling Process Innovation through Computation) is hosting its 3rd annual workshop on Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Digital Media Center on LSU's campus. The focus of this workshop will be outreach towards large numbers of chemical plants and refineries within Louisiana and surrounding locations with an outlook for future trajectories of global petrochemical and energy businesses. Rapid globalization of businesses, volatility in energy prices, and emergence of low cost labor markets have changed the landscape of traditional chemical manufacturing and petroleum refining industries dramatically. The Louisiana chemical industry aligns with the landscape of the Mississippi River due to its abundant water supply to sustain these industries, but also creates significant environmental challenges. Next-generation chemical plants and refineries must become cognizant of the long-term impacts on the environment and should address the issues of efficiency, reduced footprints, and reduced emissions in a global setting.
The EPIC consortium will be formally launched at this workshop with introductions from its founding members. EPIC consortium addresses pre-competitive research needs and advanced educational/training needs, that will, in a sustained manner, introduce innovations into the chemicals manufacturing sector (just as aerospace, automotive and information technology industries engage in continuous innovation) and produce the next generation engineers capable of sustaining this culture of innovation in the chemicals and energy extraction industries as these industries evolve to embrace newer bio-based feedstocks and integrate alternative green processing technologies into their manufacturing portfolio.
