The LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) will offer special instruction in computing with math to high school students and middle school students enrolled in high school Algebra or higher.
This program highlights the strong connections between mathematics and programming. It will provide students with a project-based introduction to coding and computer technology in an informal and engaging environment. The activities will reinforce the mathematics students already know by presenting them in the context of computing.
Participants will:
- Be introduced to state of the art functional programming.
- Solve mathematical problems by implementing them in a computer.
- Practice how to communicate mathematical ideas in a precise language.
- Learn how to use software for doing algebra and geometry on a computer.
- Teach mathematics to computers that "forgot" them.
The goal of the program is to promote interests in STEM careers among children. Engaging talks by faculty affiliated with the LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) will be included every Saturday.
WHO: Any high school student who is interested in math and computer technology is eligible for the program. No previous experience with computing is required. Transportation to and from the LSU campus will be the responsibility of parents/guardians or the student’s school.
REGISTRATION: $25 registration fee. Click here to register!
All materials (including computers) and lunch will be provided. Participants can attend as many of the three Saturday's as they wish for the one-time fee. Note: Cancellations received and post-marked prior to February 18, 2015, will receive a full refund. After February 18 no refunds will be issued. Substitutions will be permitted!
SCHEDULE: All sessions are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Each session is different, ideally students should plan to attend all three sessions but this is not mandatory).
- Session I: Saturday, February 28, 2015 [Room #1008B]
- Session 2: Saturday, March 7, 2015 [Room #1008B]
- Session 3: Saturday, March 14, 2015 [Room #1008B]
WHERE: Digital Media Center on LSU's Campus (home of the LSU CCT), located at the corner of S. Stadium and East Parker. Map it!
INSTRUCTORS: CCT Saturdays is offered by Louisiana State University and Baton Rouge Community College faculty and staff in collaboration with the LSU Center for Computation & Technology. The workshop will be presented by Fernando Alegre, computer science instructor at the Baton Rouge Community College; Kathy Traxler, LSU CCT's education, outreach and training specialist; and Juana Moreno, physics & astronomy and CCT's faculty at LSU.
